Stoke Youth Park is open!
Super excited that the Stoke Youth Park is open! It's taken some time, but it is here for the enjoyment for all.
A park on the cusp of completion is so popular the council is already struggling to keep its target audience out, but the wait is almost over.
Stoke Youth Park has been in the sights of Nelson City Council for over a decade and it’s finally come to fruition with the help of Whanake Youth and the council.
Whanake Youth Service manager Lee-ann O’Brien said youth in the community were consulted on what they were looking for in a hub, and Stoke Youth Park reflected the voices of those young adults.
“They were very clear about wanting to have a place to hang out, they wanted skating or scootering opportunities. They wanted basketball, parkour type stuff, youth workers, and nurses or counsellors to be available to talk to as well.”
Also included in the park is a large deck for chilling and a space for youth bands to play, a 20-foot container with basic kitchen facilities, bean bags, books and games and a cafe.
O’Brien said a container cafe onsite would give opportunities to young people to learn business, do business, and eventually make a profit’ paying the young adults “as well as giving back to the youth community”. https://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/127037437/climbing-the-walls-for-youth-park-opening
